Technicals

I.d magazine have specified that they would like 3 B&W photographs, with up to 3 supporting 20 second videos.

The B&W aspect is ideal for the camera I'm going to be using for this project. I will be shooting the majority of the photographs in the cover of darkness. This poses a problem when the images are made using light. Unfortunately the camera I currently own (Canon 7D) has an APSC crop sensor. The diagram below is taken from Wikipedia and shows the crop factor of my camera sensor in comparison to a 35mm sensor which is considered "full frame".

The problem with having a crop sensor camera is that the sensor cannot take in as much light as a 35mm one, this in turn means that shutter speeds have the be lower, ISO has to be higher and aperture further open. Lower shutter speeds can cause blur in moving objects and higher ISO settings cause grain over the photographs.

Thankfully film B&W photographs have a naturally grainy characteristic; they are imperfect. This characteristic suits my equipment very well as it means i can get that grainy look without worrying its not a perfect digital shot, colour image.

In terms of the supporting videos, I am thinking of doing one to support each of the 3 photographs I plan to shoot. My current thoughts are to get a photograph/ video of the driver, car and one of the drifting action. I think this gives a rounded view of drifting within the minimal amount of photographs I'm allowed to shoot. Hopefully I can capture the raw energy, rebellion and fun that is drifting.
